When completed in the fall of 2006, this bronze sculpture will be 40' tall with a 15' tall limestone base. The sculpture depicts four fallen angels climbing a Jacob's ladder.
This series of photos shows pictures of a bronze maquette, and the EPS pieces in various stages of assembly. In the final sculpture each angel has a pair of 7' long wings, not shown in the maquette. There is also a photo of one of these 8 wings.
After scanning the maquette and milling the pieces, each angel was assembled over a frame on its own ladder for clay to be added later.
After the clay is added the sculptor will do the final surface sculpting. Then, the angels will be taken to Deep in the Heart Art Foundry for the bronze casting process.
To create the 8 wings we employed a different process. Because of the thinness of the wings we reverse-milled the wings in EPS blocks, and then used these blocks as molds.
We then put a simple welded rebar armature into the mold and cast them in urethane foam. This allowed the wings to be sturdy enough for the weight of the clay that would be added in the next step.
